The Nineteenth Century in Print and Making of America Project: finding an artifact from after 1865
-
Find and identify an artifact from online databases above.

-
Find and identify three possible primary texts for your final paper (American literature written before 1865 that is not being studied in class)
-
Race, Sex, and Citizenship: Redefining America
-
Think about the course theme of race, sex, and citizenship in ethnic American literature. In 3-5 paragraphs, define this theme/term (or some other theme from the course). What are the criteria for your theme/term? When and where do we see this theme/term being used (and how)?
-
Doing a Close Reading
-
Select one passage from the text and do a close reading (3-5 paragraphs). The close reading should tie into the theme for the paper.
-
Making Connections: texts and artifacts
The artifact I chose for my paper is a picture of a jewish family. This correlates with my story "The Maus", because it's about a family after the holocaust. He's raised differently from the average child because his family went through one of the most horrible events in history. You can feel the emotion in the picture interpreting the pain that the parents will always feel. The boy will never know what the american dream feels like, but he'll know about it because of the lives of the children surrounding him. Throughout the story, he visualizes what it would be like to be a normal kid.
-
Think about the course theme of American encounters. In 3-5 paragraphs, discuss how you see this theme (or some other theme from the course) developing in both your artifact and one of your primary texts
-
Secondary Sources
-
Create a list of possible sources (5 secondary, scholarly texts) from your annotated bibliography.
-
See "Primary vs Secondary Sources" if you have questions about what constitutes secondary texts.
-
Thesis and Outline
-
The holocaust was a period in time were there was genocide, meaning that the Germans were targeting the Jews. People all over the world were impacted by these traumatic events. Art Spiegelman, the author of "The Maus”, was extremely effected by the events of the holocaust because both of his parents experienced the horror first hand. In the picture I chose for my artifact, the little boy will never know what the ideal American life would be like. Just like Spiegelman’s parents, the things they survived would make them see their world in a new way.

Revising a Paper
The holocaust was a period in time were there was genocide, meaning that the Germans were targeting the Jews. People all over the world were impacted by these traumatic events. Art Spiegelman, the author of "The Maus”, was extremely effected by the events of the holocaust because both of his parents experienced the horrors first hand. In the picture I chose for my artifact, the little boy will never know what the ideal American life would be like.
- For my artifact, I chose a picture of a Jewish boy from Germany in the 19--.
- Their eyes show their pain caused by the Nazi oppression.
-
Just like Spiegelman. Since Arts’ parents, the things they survived would make them see their world in an utterly new way; effecting how they raise their child. Through descriptive details throughout the book Spieglman shows us how the Holocaust negatively effected his parents thus causing Arts to resent his parents.
-
Distinction between Art Spiegelman the author and Art the character in Maus.
- Though the decision to use a mice to represent Jewish people, such as Art and his family, Spiegelman illustrates the idea of victimization and the ways that trickled down through generations to the children of Holocaust survivors.
-
-
The events of the holocaust were horrifying and outrageously cruel. During the 1930s to the end of the 1940s Germany was experiencing one of the most heart-wrenching periods of all time; Jews were being killed because they weren’t of the same race. In the book Maus we are introduced to Valdek and Anja parents of Art who grew up in fear for their life due to the era in which they were raised. This fear haunted them as they raised their very own child in a totally different time. By looking at the artifact I sense the spirit of depression over the family. I adamantly felt as though the son’s eyes in this picture are just crying for help, screaming for some positive attention, something to help get him through this hard time. I feel as though the picture ties into the book because Artie was seeing the brokenness in his parents that the people in the photo are portraying visually. These people are experiencing first hand what Artie was seeing in his parents day by day in the way they treated him and the way they acted towards him.

Reflection Letter and Participation
For the Final Project Rough Draft Workshop, begin by copying and pasting the rubric below onto YOUR wiki page with the rough draft of your paper. Remember, if BOTH the paper and the rubric are directly pasted to the wiki, it's a LOT easier for your reviewers.
Try to leave as many comments as I did on the paper above for your paper here.

Daily Course Work
-Excused for a women's basketball game
- The main point of the article we read about the short stories was to see if the fiction stories are a reinvention of the story at hand or a completely new story all together. and the Evidence is that we are attempting to reinvent fiction stories.
- This relates to the short stories i read from the sudden fiction because the stories were extremely short and straight to the point and very easy to read.
- "cannibals and explorers"- the cannibals were eating the parts of the explorers they admired most and then once they went back to London, they in a way turned into the Explorers, so this is showing in my opinion, the impact the Europeans had on the Natives at that time, they came in a infiltrated their way of life.
- In Montezuma, My Revolver story, i think that this shows that no one really trusted each other at this time. That both Europeans and the Indians had to look out for themselves, because the indians got taken advantage of by the Europeans.
- Martinez is saying that we in a way use a "marketing strategy" to sell our products or even ourselves to other individuals around us. So they in return accept us and do what we want. basically, we use others to get farther ahead in life.
Questions for the New Bedford Samurai
1) why did he choose to swim to the boat instead of waiting on the island? p.28
2)why did he choose the ocean instead of the mountains to escape like other people had before when trying to run away? p.16
3)why did the men choose to go on a fishing trip? p.19
4)why was Denzo so anger when Manjiro gave him the last bit of water from the well? p.25
5)what was the black captain going to do with the men they had just rescued? p.26
discussion questions for new bedrid samurai
1) Would he rather live in Japan or the U.S. and why does he make the decisions to live where he does?
I think he would rather live in the U.S. because of the opportunity he would have by living here.
2) How does Manjiro relate to the ocean( use the map above and the text)?
He relates to the ocean because the ocean is constantly flowing or moving you never touch the same ocean twice. He journeyed all over the world.
3)If the roles switched, could manjiro have been successful?
I do not believe he would have been successful if the roles switched because he wouldn't have experienced life if he just kept working, I believe success comes from experience and he had a huge life experience by traveling and seeing the world.
4) Give two examples of continuity in majors experiences and relationships with people in different places.
i believe that he was a hard worker and he really understood how to make connections with the people that came into his life.artifact
Definite of the American Hero
The American hero can be defined as someone who stands up for what they believe in. They make something of themselves even if they do not make a huge difference in their world. These American heroes go against the grain in a different direction, to stand up for what they think is right even if they are being persecuted for their beliefs. The American Hero takes charge and goes after what he/she wants. The hero will choose to take care of his family and do things that will benefit him and his family.

Great job starting your roster page! Could you post your identification material here? And you may want to create headings for your different projects so that they can be clearly identified. Welcome to the class!

We have many of the same points, especially on the "cannibals and explorers" short story. I also agree with the fact that you should sell more than just a product when conducting a business. You should sell your manners. You should treat people well because they could end up buying a service or good from you without even needing it if you treat them well.

I don’t see your 3-5 paragraphs describing your connection with your artifact, or secondary sources here. I'm glad you came to see me so that we can talk about your final project.

You should add the title of your artifact picture in the first paragraph.
"Just like Spiegelman" is a fragment.
In the sentence, "Since Art's parents, the things they survived would make them see their world in and utterly new way; effecting how they raise their child," the wording could be different. The beginning of the sentence seems incomplete. Maybe you could add the word "experience" after the word parents.
Add a comma after the word book in the sentence following the last sentence that I revised.
Add reasons why the the holocaust was horrifying and cruel.
Add a comma after the 1940s, and maybe site that sentence.
What about the artifact makes you feel the spirit of depression? Great description in the sentence after that.
